Canadian Small Business Tips On Importing From The USA

The Canadian Dollar has been lurking near the US Dollar for some time now. However recently the Canadian Dollar matched the US Dollar giving Canadian companies that import the ability to purchase from the USA at reduced prices. The Canadian Dollar has also been reaching new highs with the Euro. However for most Canadian small businesses purchasing from the USA is much more cost effective than purchasing from Europe, due to the freight cost and time factor.
Prices for most goods are more expensive in Canada than in the USA, so purchasing from USA companies gave Canadian small businesses a major advantage even before the two countries dollars became equal. However, now that they are equal in value this makes the advantage larger and something worth looking into, especially for Canadian small businesses.
Since small businesses tend to buy and import smaller quantities the things to watch for are different as compared to businesses that import truckloads. It's all not positive as importing from the USA has its pitfalls. One being freight, the other is duties that the Canadian government charges. So the question arises how do you avoid these pitfalls? First step is to buy from companies in the USA that do not charge freight or have a minimal freight charge. Second is to buy USA made goods as they have no duties as per NAFTA. While USA made goods continue to become less common due to the decline in manufacturing these goods still exist. Of course you need to stay clear from USA businesses that strictly import. Purchasing from a company that has free shipping to Canada and sells USA made products is nearly as easy as buying from a Canadian company only the savings will be much larger which of course will benefit your business.
It does require some research of USA companies shipping policies. You also want to research brokerage charges. You should deal with USA companies familiar with shipping to Canada as these companies often negotiate much smaller brokerage charges and pass these savings on to you.
So before purchasing from USA companies ask about the freight cost (if any), where the products are made and the brokerage charges. Give yourself a major edge over the competition by purchasing from USA companies that are experienced in exporting to Canada and watch your small business grow.
